When God created the earth and the heavens, He established the orbits of the earth and moon around the sun with several things in mind. Our earth-moon system is unique in the solar system because the moon is close to earth in size and mass. In many ways, the moon helps to keep life in balance on the earth. For example, the moon causes the tides that help create ocean currents and circulate nutrients and oxygenate earth's oceans. I recommend you read "Double Planet", by Isaac Assimov to learn more about our remarkable moon and its beneficial effects on the earth.
Given the size and energy output of any star, there is a narrow band of space around that star in which the earth could be allowed to orbit if liquid water, vital for life, was to exist. If the earth was a few million miles close to the sun, we would have only water vapor and steam. If we were a little farther from the sun, only ice could exist. These conditions would preclude the possibility of life on earth.
The circuit of the earth around the sun marks a year, and I think that God had a specific number of days in mind to comprise that year. The period of rotation of the earth and the tilt of its axis of rotation provided the duration of the day and the seasons that prescribe planting and harvest times. These factors dictated the selection of a star of the size and characteristics of our sun to allow an orbital period of about 365 days for our planet. The orbital period of the moon defined the month. The first chapter of Genesis tells us that God engineered all these parameters. He intended the cycles of sun and moon to be signals of impending appointments:
Gen 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to separate day from night and let them serve as signs for both festivals and for seasons and for years. (New English Bible)
The word translated "festivals" is the Hebrew word "moade" and it means appointments or festivals. The sun and moon signal the approach of these festivals, just as the setting sun signals the approach of the weekly Sabbath, an important festival or appointment man has with God. The astounding truth is that these festivals mark out what God is doing with mankind! It is by keeping these festivals and understanding their meaning that the real plan of God has been rediscovered, having been lost to Christianity for nearly 2000 years!
Perhaps you should have these appointments in the schedule portion of your daily planner. Have you been missing important appointments?
